William Carlos Whitten (the nom de guerre of Bill Whitten) was the founding member, principal songwriter and singer/guitarist for St. Johnny. St. Johnny formed in 1989 in Hartford, Connecticut and made three full-length albums, one for Rough Trade and two for DGC Records, before disbanding in 1995. Rolling Stone described St. Johnny as "a Connecticut band that likes their music loud and hard, are intent on a punk-edged sound that has more in common with the Ramones or Sonic Youth than with the latest Sub Pop release. In addition, St. Johnny possess a flair for song-craft, hooks and…hummable melodies".

Following the dissolution of St. Johnny, Whitten formed Grand Mal  in New York City in 1995 and recorded seven albums for No.6 Records, Slash/London Records, Arena Rock Recording Co., New York Night Train and Groover Recordings. The New York Times described the sound of the band: "Grand Mal mixes three parts Rolling Stones, one part Velvet Underground … rock with an unabashed swagger."

He has worked regularly with producer Dave Fridmann and has collaborated on recordings with members of Mercury Rev, Amen Dunes, The Flaming Lips, The Favourite Sons, Home, Shady, The Silent League, Hopewell, The Jealous Girlfriends, The Mooney Suzuki, VietNam, Mike Bones and others…

His first release as William Carlos Whitten was 2018’s Burn My Letters. In 2021 My Life in Cinema was released on Lancashire England's Wormhole World Records.

Ecstatic Laments - Songs from 2018-2022 is a collection of tracks from both albums and also includes three previously unreleased songs.

Along with the release of Ecstatic Laments, 2022 has also seen the release of Whitten’s first book of short fiction - BRUTES - on Too Big to Fail Press.
